Yoga in the West Vs Authentic Indian Yoga

Deepti started teaching yoga in a fitness studio in Canada in 2023. She was excited to propagate & spread the traditional yoga & teachings of her gurus in the West & this seemed like a perfect opportunity!

However, few months down the line, she started facing some subtle backlash from the studio owners & her class attendees for her traditional yoga teaching style. However, this was because the her Western audience had never experienced traditional Yoga practice. It was only when they realized the benefits of practicing Yoga traditionally in heir health condition with just a few classes, they highly appreciated her way of teaching.

She realized that Yoga is the West is very different from Yoga in South Asia in India. This also mad her realize there is a huge gap in Yoga industry in the West, as there are hardly any authentic Indian Yoga teachers available who do not target the practice as a workout, but a spiritual practice to align body, mind & state of being as one.

Most of the yoga trainers in the West are trained in modern yoga and mainly focus on strength flows. Yoga industry in the West primarily is built on the ideology of word 'Flows'.

Once, while teaching a class, one of her students had a deep release experience & while she shared that it was for the first time that she experienced such a release, she still thought class has something missing, because Deepti's teaching in that particular class was quite elaborate, slow with lot of cueing around breath & alignment. Many Western yoga centers still have to come to age to the fact that Yoga is beyond strength flows!

Deepti found the essence of yoga missing in the Western world, at least at the places where she taught, with a lot of focus on flowing intense movement without even preparing the students for those flows. She found many spiritual & deep rooted healing elements missing in Western yoga which she leant from her gurus & ancient lineages.

However, she enjoyed the fact that how deeply the Western yoga focused on stability in the flows. Some of her peer teachers she admired for their strength in their flawless flows that can only happen with deep intense stretches in the flows.

Why YOGRASYA is Different

With her rich Yogic background, and some amazing opportunities in renowned Yoga communities that she got in Canada, Deepti realized a big gap in the Yoga space in the West. The teachers from the yoga lineage hardly exist, & are only found during some bog Yoga events. Most Western people wish to study in India the authentic Yoga but most cannot travel to India for Yoga studies for various constraints.

Deepti gradually found her community that highly appreciated her authentic teaching style.

With YOGRASYA, Deepti intends to bring the classical approach to Yoga to Canada & teach authentic Indian Yoga from tradition.

Propagating Traditional Yoga

With a strong leap of faith in her authentic learnings, Deepti decided to create a space that introduces Westerners to authentic traditional Indian yoga and give them the experience of age-old Indian Yoga tradition.

Therefore, Yogarasya came into existence, to offer what modern yoga does not offer, what many people need, not just the flows but the approach to unite body & mind with asana, breath alignment and a deep meditative focus.
