A glimpse into my routine based on Yogic, Ayurvedic, Macrobiotic & TCM Practices.
'Learn to be disciplined in your selfcare if you seek to live well. Nature does not scold you for going against its laws, but you will surely bear the consequences subtly of not living in accordance to nature's laws. No-one can challenge the laws of nature! - Deepti Sehgal'
I am a core believer in the teachings, discipline, regime & rituals mentioned in the ancient philosophies of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yogic Sciences & Macrobiotics. I wasn’t ever much disciplined about how I structure my day to reap best outcomes through the day.
I had great ideas but no time to implement, just because as I used to sit back to work forming my strategies, either it was lunch-time or snack-time, or something else used to came up. And I constantly used to ask myself, with everyone having the same number of hours in hand, what do the achievers do different to be able to realize all their personal & work goals.
By virtue of my education in the global ancient sciences, I realized the secret to achievements. The power of daily discipline is highly disregarded in today’s modern society. When it is time to have breakfast, most people are sleeping, when it is the time to work, we are saturating our digestive power having meals or stimulants like tea, when it is the time to sleep, we are often engaged in stimulating our senses adversely glued in front of television. It has become a common norm of life, & so have become the low energy levels, allergies & growing number of diseases.
However, through yogic knowledge & delving deeper in Ayurveda, gradually I worked to map my daily routine as per the flow of energy through the day. You can best capitalize on your energies & improve your energy levels by regulating your day based on times when energy flows high or low within the body. That’s the ancient science of ‘Prana-The Life Force’!
Check-out a glimpse of how I regulated my energy levels by following this flow in pattern to match the flow of universal energies for improving upon my energy levels.
Morning Ritual 1: Wake-Up Time-4.45 am followed by Oil Pulling – Age-Old Ayurveda technique to cleanse the oral cavity. Cleansing ourselves is not just limited to brushing & bathing. There lies a deeper science at the core of it. Being one of the sense organs, our tongue is responsible for taking in anything we consume, & most often than not, we end up listening to our tastes than our body. Because taste is our priority, through the tongue we keep tasting ample healthy & non-healthy stuff through the day. However, even if you are consuming the most healthy stuff, the molecules of undigested matter & metabolic wastes tend to rise upwards & get layered in the tongue & around the oral cavity. The early morning smell in the mouth is the effect of risen toxins & a quick brushing with a favorite toothpaste is like layering the toxins with a perfumed toothpaste. 10 minutes of dedicated oral hygiene practice by pulling out toxins with oil pulling, goes a long way in supporting oral health as well as overall health. Done properly, Oil pulling pulls out toxins not just from mouth cavity, but from the upper digestive tract…It is surely a powerful technique to clean your taste senses.
It is very important to put only pure oils for oil pulling in your mouth, or else you may end up accumulating more toxins than releasing them!
Morning Ritual 2: Lemon Water Time – 5 am – The day begins with a glass of plain lemon water. Why?…Because the taste of lemon stimulates secretions that boost the liver to perform its detoxifying action faster & deeper. Modern nutrition justifies this Ayurveda concept by proving the role of Vitamin C in body cleansing!
Morning Ritual 3: On the mat – 5.30 am. Yoga is gradually becoming an important part of my daily regime, not just because exercise must be done daily…but because I better understand how energy operates within our body, & how important it is to regulate our ‘Prana’ early morning to derive the energy for the day!
Earlier exercising in the morning used to be more of an external ritual for me, being performed out of necessity to maintain good health. However, as I progressed in my TCM, Yogic & Ayurveda knowledge, I realized, the ancient idea of exercising early morning was way different from how we perceive it now…Most if us end up being tired after a strenuous morning exercise…Why is that so? Because we did not ever understand the purpose of early morning exercise!
Look at your early morning exercise this way, & a nicely planned exercise practice everyday will begin to make much sense to you…
When you wake up early morning after your autonomously working internal systems are done with performing their job of cleaning us within throughout our rest time at night, it is the time for our body to consciously support the body in purging out accumulated toxins. We clear-out our bowels & the cleansing action becomes better with a glass of lemon water. We cleanse oral cavity which further helps remove toxins from as deep as upper respiratory tract. Then, moving onto exercise is a good practice to awaken each & every cell in the body. Exercise when done with conscious flow of breath, activates each & every sleeping cell, muscle & organ in the body, making it active to perform its tasks & be ready for the day. A carefully designed exercise program must focus on the flow of prana in accordance with the goal that you carry ahead for the day. For example, if you feel your belly feels bloated & it must be taken into consideration for that specific day, the flow of exercise must be such that helps prana flow in the stomach & lower body area, allowing for the release of bloat. That particular day, the prana flow must not be inversions (head down foot up) as it will cause the gas to get into the head leading to vata issues in the head like headaches & migraine. So, precisely, I listen to the rhythm of my body each day to get into my own Yogic flow of asanas. This completes the cleanse & body activating activities.
Morning Ritual 4: Post Yoga Nourishment – 8 am. A plant-based dose of protein consumes with vegetable stock, takes care of my protein needs after my 2 hour yoga session. Consumed in vegetable stock, it helps mineralize the body of lost minerals during my practice!
Practice your selfcare discipline if you actually intend to keep your body & mind in proper order for a lifetime. We have all the conveniences today, we are living the way we like, bound by our senses, & we are the sickest generation of all times…Discipline of way of life is a great power & Ayurveda & TCM sciences always have focused on this aspect as the very first step to a healthy body & mind.
